Ethereality: Book II in the Evanescent Trilogy
Nashi rose into the sky until she was well above the cloud bank. She oriented herself to the chart and began to fly towards the horizon. Coming into view was a chain of ancient volcanic islands, long dormant, but their jagged peaks actually reached above the clouds. As she descended to the islands, she saw that their height provided them with a natural shield from the normally raging storms of the area. She waited until dawn to land, she’d been circling the islands and found one that had a structure carved into the rock. As the light brightened the fertile landscape became clearer. There were lush meadows and forest surrounding the valley, but there were no soldiers or guards, no ships or even other structures. The island was magnificent, the fortress was carved right into the peaks of the old volcano. Sprawling flower covered forests crawled right up to the cliffs of the mountains. She smelled the sweet flowers and noticed a few Yew trees scattered about. She knew to be leery of them and recalled the Healer telling her something about birch and yew rarely growing in the same place. She became a bit more cautious as she continued to walk along a well-worn path and as she approached the complex, she could smell blood and sense dark magic all around her. There was an entire grove of birch trees surrounding the front of the structure. She walked up the stone steps and went inside the heavy door that was already opened.
Surreal: Book III in the Evanescent Trilogy
The eastern coast of the Water-Meadows was on the horizon by sunset thanks to one of the crewmen being an elemental, he’d spent the entire day increasing the current around the ship. Minn watched as the sun went down and the sky became littered with stars. The new Aontas Moon trailing a magnificent spectrum of colors as it skated across the sky. Minn grabbed the bag Iolar had brought her as Iolar grew in size so she could sit on him, she climbed on his back and he took to the sky. Onóir watched them head for the coast as he stood his front legs on the railing and looked back at the crew and said, “Contract fulfilled boys! Thanks!” then he too leapt into the sky. The crew were all shaking their heads and coming out of the daze the enchantment caused. Some looked around the deck at the scattered wood and flower vines of the wrecked cabin while others watched a wolf speak to them then fly away. One of the men asked, “Did a flying wolf just thank us?” the first mate just shook his head and said, “We gotta be more careful who we let hire us.” The rest of the crew chuckled and they changed course.
